All disks with native 4K BPS support Advanced format 512e and present themselves as 512 bytes per sector to Windows. A GPT formatted disk has a theoretical maximum partition size of 9.4 ZB (9.4 × 10**21 bytes) with a 512 BPS disk, so, unlike MBR initialized disks, 512 BPS does not present a problem for large disks. Highpoint makes a 4K native card which then presents the data from a 4KN drive as 512e to the computer. It seems to me that the issue is having a motherboard chipset that understands native 4k sectors if you want to avoid the 512e conversion. "4Kn" is referred to 4K native, indicated as the original AF hard drive. Unlike the 512e hard drive, it doesn't emulate 512-byte sectors. That is to say, it is incompatible with some operating systems and applications. Currently, the 4Kn drives still make up small minorities in the market, but it is the future of hard drive technology. Since you can't mix 4kn and 512e/n you're going to have to back everything up, delete the old volume, and then make a new one. The riskier version, but I still would always recommend having backups for, is to try degrading. Assuming you're using RAID5 or RAID6 (or SHR-1/2) then pull out a disk, put in a 10TB, and don't repair.

Feb 14, 2021 · ashift=9 works poorly with any 4kn. used to be default. i have 4kn and 512e mixed, no problems observed. I dug around and found a command to check ashift on my pools and it is already set at 12. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. A hard disk that is configured with 4K physical sectors with 512-byte logical sectors, the so-called 512e, comes out. It is coupled with 512-byte conversion firmware so that the 4K physical sectors used in Advanced Format are translated into 8 traditional 512-byte logical sectors compatible with host computing systems.

Because Advanced Format disks (4Kn (native) and 512e (emulated)) organize the data in larger sectors and higher storage densities, incompatibility situations may arise.
